DELE A2 Spanish Practice: Grammar & Vocabulary Tests
DELE Main Hub | DELE B1 Hub | DELE B2 Hub
The DELE A2 exam certifies that you can handle everyday situations in Spanish — introducing yourself, shopping, describing your background, and managing simple transactions. It is the level required for Spanish citizenship, which makes it the most-taken DELE exam worldwide.
This page collects all our A2 practice tests, organized by topic. Each practice page includes a five-set quiz: an evaluation set to see where you stand, three practice sets to drill the topic, and a challenge set to confirm mastery. Every page also includes a full grammar review below the quiz. Work through the topics in any order. Or start with the evaluation set on each page to see where you stand.
What the DELE A2 Exam Is
The DELE A2 is the second level of the Instituto Cervantes diploma system. It certifies that you can understand and use everyday expressions related to areas of immediate relevance — personal information, family, shopping, places of interest, and occupations. You can handle simple, direct exchanges about familiar topics and describe your past and environment in simple terms.
A2 is the minimum level required for Spanish citizenship, which drives the highest exam volume of any DELE level. It is also the level most beginners target after 6–9 months of study.
The exam is offered multiple times a year at authorized centers worldwide. Results are permanent — the diploma does not expire.
Exam Structure at A2
The DELE A2 tests four skills across four papers. You need 60% overall to pass, and a minimum score on each of the two groups.
| Paper | Skill | Time | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reading comprehension | 60 min | 4 tasks, 25 items |
| 2 | Listening comprehension | 40 min | 4 tasks, 25 items |
| 3 | Written expression | 45 min | 2 tasks |
| 4 | Oral expression | 12 min + 12 min prep | 3 tasks |
Group 1 combines reading and listening. Group 2 combines writing and speaking. You need 60% in each group, not just overall. A strong reading score cannot compensate for a weak speaking score.
The writing paper asks for a short message or letter (60–70 words) and a longer text (70–80 words). The speaking paper includes a personal presentation, a photo description, and a simulated conversation.
Grammar and Vocabulary Tested at A2
A2 consolidates the foundations. It does not introduce advanced structures — it drills the basics until they are automatic.
The main grammar points tested at A2:
- Ser vs. estar for descriptions, nationality, profession, and location
- Present tense — regular, irregular, and reflexive verbs
- Present progressive (estar + gerund)
- Preterite vs. imperfect — narrating past events
- Present perfect — recent past and life experiences
- Future with ir a + infinitive
- Direct and indirect object pronouns
- Gustar and similar verbs
- Comparatives and basic commands
- Prepositions for location and time
The vocabulary themes are everyday topics: personal information, family, housing, shopping, food, health, work, and daily routines. The reading and listening passages use simple authentic texts — advertisements, menus, schedules, short messages, and conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions
The DELE A2 is the second-level Spanish diploma issued by the Instituto Cervantes. Yes. Since 2015, Spain requires DELE A2 (or higher) for citizenship applications. You also need to pass the CCSE exam, which tests knowledge of Spanish culture and constitution. The DELE A2 proves language ability; the CCSE proves civic knowledge. Both are required.
From scratch, most students need 6–9 months of consistent study to reach A2. That assumes regular practice across all four skills. From A1, it takes 3–4 months. The exam rewards familiarity with everyday vocabulary and basic grammatical structures, so consistent exposure matters more than cramming.
You need 60% overall, but the score is grouped. Group 1 combines reading and listening. Group 2 combines writing and speaking. You must reach 60% in each group, not just overall. A strong reading score cannot compensate for a weak speaking score. Each group is scored out of 50 points, so you need 30 points in each group to pass.
A1 certifies basic survival Spanish — greetings, simple questions, isolated phrases. A2 certifies that you can handle predictable everyday situations with simple exchanges. The grammar overlap is significant, but A2 demands more vocabulary, better control of past tenses, and the ability to describe experiences. A2 is the citizenship level; A1 is not.
