What the DELE B1 Exam Is
The DELE B1 is the intermediate-level diploma from the Instituto Cervantes. It certifies that you can handle everyday situations in Spanish — describing experiences, expressing opinions, and managing familiar topics without strain. It is the threshold level for independent use of the language.
B1 is the most common requirement for Spanish residency applications, some university programs, and entry-level jobs that ask for Spanish. It is also the level most students target first, because it is achievable in 6–12 months of consistent study from A2.
The exam is offered multiple times a year at authorized centers worldwide. Results are permanent — the diploma does not expire.
Exam Structure at B1
The DELE B1 tests four skills across four papers. You need 60% overall to pass, and a minimum score on each of the two groups.

Group 1 combines reading and listening. Group 2 combines writing and speaking. You need 60% in each group, not just overall. A strong reading score cannot compensate for a weak speaking score.
The writing paper asks for a formal or informal letter (150–180 words) and an essay or article (130–150 words). The speaking paper includes a monologue, a conversation, and a description task.
Grammar and Vocabulary Tested at B1
B1 does not introduce many new structures. It consolidates what you know and adds depth: past-tense contrast, the subjunctive in wishes and doubt, conditional sentences, and reported speech.

- Contrast between preterite and imperfect
- Present perfect and its uses in Spain and Latin America
- Future and conditional forms, including irregular stems
- Present subjunctive for wishes, emotions, and doubt
- Imperfect subjunctive in si clauses

- Relative pronouns and connectors
- Reported speech
- Double object pronouns
The vocabulary themes are everyday topics: health and body, travel, work, education, food, housing, and social relationships. The reading and listening passages use real-world texts — advertisements, emails, news, instructions, and conversations.
