AP Spanish Preterite vs. Imperfect: Practice Test & Review
The preterite and imperfect both translate to the English past, but they do different jobs. The preterite reports a completed action — a single event, a sequence of events, or an action with a clear beginning or end. The imperfect describes an ongoing situation — background, habit, age, time, weather, or an action in progress with no defined end. The AP exam tests this in every reading passage that narrates an event, and in the email reply and argumentative essay, where a wrong past tense is one of the errors a rater notices first.
This page gives you a five-part practice quiz: an evaluation set to see where you stand, three practice sets to drill the contrast, and a challenge set to confirm mastery. Every question is built around a time marker, an interruption, or a sentence structure that forces exactly one tense. If you get stuck, scroll down for the full grammar guide.

Grammar Guide
This guide explains the difference between the preterite and the imperfect in Spanish narration. The quiz above drills the contrast. The guide is for review and reference.
The Rule
The preterite reports a completed action — a single event, a sequence of events, or an action with a clear beginning or end. The imperfect describes an ongoing situation — background, habit, age, time, weather, or an action in progress with no defined end. When both tenses appear in one sentence, the imperfect usually sets the scene and the preterite reports the event that interrupts it. The choice depends on how the speaker frames the action, not on how long it lasted.

| de repente | suddenly | Preterite — reports an event |
| todos los días | every day | Imperfect — repeated action |
| una vez | once, one time | Preterite — single event |
| mientras tanto | meanwhile | Imperfect — ongoing background |
Common Mistakes
1. Imperfect with a completed time marker.
✗ Ayer iba al cine.
✓ Ayer fui al cine.
Ayer marks a completed single event, so the preterite is required.
2. Preterite for a past habit.
✗ Cuando era niño, jugué mucho con mi perro.
✓ Cuando era niño, jugaba mucho con mi perro.
Cuando era niño + repeated action is a habit, so the imperfect is required.
3. Preterite in the background clause with mientras.
✗ Mientras estudié, sonó el teléfono.
✓ Mientras estudiaba, sonó el teléfono.
Mientras introduces an ongoing action, so the imperfect is required in that clause.
4. Imperfect for the interrupting event.
✗ Mientras dormía, mi madre llamaba.
✓ Mientras dormía, mi madre llamó.
The interrupting event is a single completed action, so the preterite is required.

Yesterday I played soccer with my friends.
Ayer marks a single completed event, so the preterite jugué is required.
