Vocabulary Guide

This guide organizes the vocabulary for the Global Challenges theme by sub-category. The quiz above drills the words. The guide is for review and reference.

The Theme

Global Challenges is the AP theme that covers the major issues facing societies around the world: poverty, inequality, migration, human rights, and environmental sustainability. The vocabulary for this theme is abstract and analytical — it is the language you need to discuss problems, causes, and solutions in an argumentative essay.

The three most common sub-categories on the exam are poverty and inequality, migration and human rights, and environment and sustainability. These overlap with the Science and Technology theme (climate change, health) and the Personal and Public Identities theme (migration, belonging). The vocabulary is the same; the framing is different.
