DELE B1 Conditional Perfect: Practice Test & Review

◄ Back to DELE B1 Hub

The conditional perfect (habría hablado) is tested on the DELE B1 exam in reading passages about regrets and in listening sections about hypothetical past situations. It pairs directly with the imperfect subjunctive in si clauses. If you can’t form it or can’t distinguish it from the future perfect, you’ll lose points.

This page gives you a five-part practice quiz: an evaluation set to see where you stand, three practice sets to drill the forms and uses, and a challenge set to confirm mastery. If you get stuck, scroll down for the full explanation. Ready? Start with the evaluation set below.

Grammar Guide

The Rule

The conditional perfect (condicional compuesto) expresses what would have happened under different past conditions. It is formed with the conditional of haber (habría, habrías, habría, habríamos, habríais, habrían) plus the past participle.

It is used for regrets, hypothetical past situations, and the main clause of past si clauses. The si clause takes the past perfect subjunctive (hubiera + participle); the main clause takes the conditional perfect.

The past participle never changes form with the subject. Habría hablado, habríamos hablado — the participle stays hablado.

Past Si Clauses

StructureMeaningExampleTranslation
Si + past perfect subjunctive + conditional perfectHypothetical pastSi hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado. If I had studied, I would have passed.
Si + past perfect subjunctive + conditionalMixed: past condition, present resultSi hubiera estudiado, ahora sería médico. If I had studied, I would be a doctor now.
Si + imperfect subjunctive + conditionalHypothetical presentSi estudiara, aprobaría.If I studied, I would pass.

The past perfect subjunctive uses hubiera (or hubiese) + participle. Hubiera and hubiese are interchangeable.

Conditional Perfect vs. Future Perfect

UseFormExampleTranslation
Completed before a future deadlineFuture perfectPara mañana, habré terminado.By tomorrow, I will have finished.
Would have happened under different past conditionsConditional perfectHabría terminado, pero faltaban datos.I would have finished, but data was missing.
Real past regretConditional perfectHabría ido, pero no me invitaron.I would have gone, but they didn’t invite me.

Future perfect looks forward. Conditional perfect looks back at what didn’t happen.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using the future perfect where the conditional perfect is required.
✗ Si hubiera estudiado, habré aprobado.
✓ Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado.
The main clause of a past si clause takes the conditional perfect, not the future perfect.
  2. Forgetting the irregular participle.
    ✗ Habría hacido la tarea.
    ✓ Habría hecho la tarea.
Hacer has the irregular participle hecho, not hacido.
  3. Using the imperfect subjunctive instead of the past perfect subjunctive in the si clause.
✗ Si estudiara, habría aprobado. (unclear)
✓ Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado.
For a past hypothetical, the si clause takes the past perfect subjunctive.
  4. Making the participle agree with the subject.
    ✗ Nosotros habríamos hablados.
    ✓ Nosotros habríamos hablado.
The past participle never changes form.
