The future perfect (habré hablado) is tested on the DELE B1 exam in reading passages about deadlines and in listening sections about completed future actions. It answers the question “will you have done it by then?” If you can’t form it or can’t distinguish it from the simple future, you’ll lose points.

This page gives you a five-part practice quiz: an evaluation set to see where you stand, three practice sets to drill the forms and uses, and a challenge set to confirm mastery. If you get stuck, scroll down for the full explanation. Ready? Start with the evaluation set below.

Grammar Guide

The Rule

The future perfect (futuro compuesto) expresses an action that will be completed before a specific point in the future. It is formed with the future tense of haber (habré, habrás, habrá, habremos, habréis, habrán) plus the past participle.

It answers the question “will you have done it by then?” The future perfect always implies a deadline or a reference point — usually introduced by para or cuando.

Future Perfect vs. Simple Future

UseFormExampleTranslation
Future action, no deadlineSimple futureMañana iré al médico.Tomorrow I will go to the doctor.
Completed before a deadlineFuture perfectPara mañana, habré ido al médico.By tomorrow, I will have gone to the doctor.
Action completed before another future actionFuture perfectCuando llegues, habré preparado la cena. When you arrive, I will have prepared dinner.
Prediction of completion by a future dateFuture perfectPara 2050, la ciencia habrá curado muchas enfermedades.By 2050, science will have cured many diseases.

If there is a deadline or a “by the time” clause, use the future perfect. Otherwise, use the simple future.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using the simple future where a deadline requires the future perfect.
✗ Para el viernes, terminaré el proyecto.
✓ Para el viernes, habré terminado el proyecto.
Para el viernes is a deadline. It requires the future perfect.
  2. Forgetting the irregular participle.
✗ Para mañana, habré hacido la tarea.
✓ Para mañana, habré hecho la tarea.
Hacer has the irregular participle hecho, not hacido.
  3. Making the participle agree with the subject.
    ✗ Nosotros habremos hablados.
    ✓ Nosotros habremos hablado.
The past participle never changes form in the future perfect.
  4. Confusing habré with habría.
    ✗ Para mañana, habría terminado.
    ✓ Para mañana, habré terminado.
Habría is conditional (would have). Habré is future (will have).
